Real-Time Systems

The Real-Time Systems Group was established in 1987. It has conducted research in local and wide-area network planning, task scheduling on uniprocessor and multicore systems under energy constraints, and has explored mechanisms for fault tolerance in real-time systems.

The group has developed a real-time operating system (SOOS) for embedded systems and has worked on the modeling and requirements analysis of cyber-physical systems. In recent years, research has focused on collaborative systems and the Internet of Things (IoT), driven by interest in opportunistic and mobile ad-hoc networks. The group collaborates with researchers from Italy, Spain, Chile, Brazil, and the United States. Alongside research in real-time and communication systems, the use of hardware description languages for the implementation of reconfigurable digital architectures constitutes another key area of work.

Since 2012, the group has collaborated with the Analytical Chemistry Group at INQUISUR on instrumentation and analysis for various applications, leading to technology transfer within an interdisciplinary project. More recently, a new line of research has been initiated in collaboration with researchers from CERZOS. The list of publications, including dates and authors, provides a chronological overview of the group’s development. The Digital Systems Laboratory, home to the group, is part of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DIEC) and the Institute of Computer Science and Engineering (ICIC).

Mission

The group’s primary line of research involves the study, analysis, simulation, and implementation of real-time constrained systems operating on digital hardware—typically embedded systems, FPGAs, communication networks—and their applications of interest within the local industrial and socio-economic sectors.
